description: For many Americans, in house craft-working is a cheaper, faster and more fulfilling way to create or repair small to moderately sized pieces than finding and paying for a skilled craftsman. However, some hobbyist crafting equipment, such as lathes, can often be bulky or prohibitively expensive. Our model would include a chuck to grip a piece on just one side, in addition it would also include a tool post on an adjustable x- and y- axis. Designed small enough to fit on a typical desk space and cheap enough to not break the bank, it would fill the hole for fine- tuned but reliable craftsmanship. A mini lathe will be built as a mock-up to illustrate the principal design features of a portable wood lathe, whose major functional specifications will be demonstrated through SolidWorks motion study and dynamics analysis of a detailed CAD model.
