description: Respiratory therapy is a post-operative procedure that is critical in the rehabilitation of a patient. However, traditional spirometry is tedious to execute and to document. Currently, patients use a spirometer to complete this therapy under the guidance of a medical professional who is responsible for tracking progress. This leaves a gap in the process that could be filled by introducing incentivized therapy along with digital tracking. Our project addresses both aspects to make it easier to assess data as well as reducing the amount of time a patient is required to complete respiratory therapy. This system uses pre-existing technology including an incentive spirometer and game-based motion tracking software. The goal is to combine these two technologies to improve the outcome of respiratory therapy by incentivizing the patient through a gaming system, which both records and tracks the patient's progress through the course of respiratory therapy. Although physical testing could not be completed due to the distance learning of the course, existing research indicates that patient’s recovery time could be expedited if they are incentivized to complete their therapy. This technology will benefit patients, physicians, and hospitals by allowing for more accurate tracking of progress, higher patient satisfaction, and shorter in-patient stays. Future steps for this project include in-person testing and refining data analysis and presentation.
