description: The Syrian civil war has ravaged through the country, causing outstanding damage to the people and built-environment. Millions of survivors have either fled their homes or stayed behind in the damaged buildings. Some receive basic humanitarian aid with short-term relief in mind, but I believe that asset-based architecture can help address some of the neglected long-term needs. Each person has a story, and each person has their individual unique needs. Humans have been building structures to meet their specific needs well before architecture was established as an organized field of theory, and every human has the ability to contribute. In the case of the Syrian peoples, any architectural aid should strive to offer high flexibility in its use. An architectural solution must also capitalize on the use of local materials and expertise to increase its efficiency and achieve a sense of ownership and place. Through a deployable architectural kit containing tools, minimal building materials, and some instructional materials on example usage, they can rebuild their damaged buildings on their own terms. Not only could the rebuilding provide a stable residence, but also incubate space for the residents to revive the local economy.
