Leakage current and arcing from faulty insulation and junctions can cause partial discharge (PD) that further damages the lines. PD induces electromagnetic and audio responses that can be used for detection. This project is developing devices to record audio and algorithms for analysis and classification of potential PD related events. Such a system would help the utility company focus inspections and maintenance to minimize device and junction failures. This project is supported by Eversource.
