description: Scoliosis is a three dimensional deformity determined by the lateral curving of the backbone affecting the coronal, sagittal and axial planes of the body. The curve can be located from any here on the back, ranging from thoracic to lumbar sections. It can also form an S shaped curve with 2 curves, one located at the thoracic section and the other at the lumbar section. About 2% of the population is diagnosed with the disease. Currently, in order to diagnose scoliosis, a physical eye-test examination is done first. If the clinician believes the patient may have scoliosis, the patient is often sent for an x-ray or CT scan so that more information can be gathered. Eye examinations are prone to human error and medical imaging are expensive and can’t expose a patient to unnecessary radiation if examination is not needed. Our design will solve these problems by taking out human error and limiting imaging for diagnosis. To do this, our platform will feature a sensor system that will be placed along the spine and will track the location of these points. By looking at the points on a mobile app, it will be very easy to diagnose curvature. By plotting the points on plane, the app will be able to connect the points and give an accurate estimation of the shape of the spine. Furthermore, the app will be able to calculate the Cobb angle, something that is a timely calculation and can only be calculated using x-ray currently.
