description: Studies have shown that hackers have been increasingly more active during the coronavirus pandemic. According to data extracted and analyzed by Atlas VPN, remote desktop protocol attacks rocketed by 330% since the beginning of the pandemic in March. With the new social distancing standards being put in place around the world and everything going digital in 2020, our group decided to do a research study on a few different attacks which are commonly used by cyber criminals. This is important because now more than ever before in human history, there is an influx in the number of people using the internet and online services. We wanted to see if we could simulate these types of attacks and then apply different methods of mitigation to defend our server from the attacker. We set up the experiment through the creation of a Windows 2012 server and a Windows 10operating system within virtualbox. We connected both of the devices to the same network to simulate an internal hacker who is trying to gain access to data and information of which they are not authorized. That internal hacker launches the attack scripts from the user machine to the server, upon a successful attack attempt, the server administrators are to use all tools at their disposal to mitigate the attack and reinforce the network's security and integrity. In this research paper we will go in depth on our objective, the methods we used to reach that objective and our findings.
