The living need the spacein their everyday life.This thesis finds a solution to this issue by researching the history andcurrent uses of cemeteries, and other ways to part with the dead. Iwill also be looking into America’s views on death and the partingprocess. Because of the growing secularization in America there ismore of an opportunity to change these rituals now than ever before.In order to test this thesis, I have designed a site to pay respect to thosewe have lost as well as celebrate and reflect on life. After deciding onthe important elements needed, this concept was applied to anothersite across the country. Two sites cannot solve this problem, but theycan serve as examples of what can be done, and how we can goabout parting with the dead. They can start to demonstrate howcities can part with the dead in a more sustainable, meaningful way.
