The continual density into which mankind is progressing will not provide a greater sense of community. Community comes from an interaction, negotiation, and empowerment among a system of people with diverse needs and capabilities. Community-based design-build has the potential to create a powerful atmosphere that inspires a sense of belonging. Prompting collaboration between people and communities to participate in the architectural process could be utilized to create social sustainability. The notion of a community-based design/build process is integral to making successful buildings and an urban environment of connected members. The creation of hybrid building systems for negotiation will promote stronger communities. Encouraging the smart growth of systems will have a longer and greater social impact. Prefabricated construction systems - coupled with flexible and dynamic construction strategies - will result in a more controllable housing. There are various strategies in architectural practice to draw communities into the process. To better engage communities more control has to be returned to. A kit of parts was explored through various methods to seek out a more immersive design-build process that empowers citizens. The ease of construction was cataloged and promoted through simple connections that can be assembled by laypeople The identified precedents define a body of work that empowers ordinary people. Finally, a series of physical tests were completed that allow skilled and unskilled individuals to work together to create designs for shared environments.
