description: The SAE Front Suspension and Steering Design/Analysis team developed detailed design and analysis tools for the front suspension and steering of the Mini-Baja student competition car. Through an intense redesign process to accommodate a four-wheel-drive vehicle, the Baja SAE club will position itself for success at the 2021 and 2022 competitions. The team developed a front suspension and steering design which included goals of reaching a 7-foot turning radius with 6 degrees of suspension camber change for cornering stability and includes allowances for shock and suspension adjustments to accommodate various track conditions. A detailed front suspension and steering system design required the development of a variety of tools including excel calculators for numerical analysis and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) verification of all critical components. The efforts included the design of all necessary manufacturing fixtures and assembly procedures. Due to the pandemic of 2020, the Baja team is not able to build a car which modified the original project goals to include creating detailed process plans and processes for next year’s team to take over the project. Future teams will be able to easily apply the information acquired from the research, analysis and a preliminary design of the front suspension and steering systems by utilizing detailed calculators with user guides and SolidWorks models provided to develop future suspension and steering designs.
