description: The often misshapen and unmaintained areas which reside along existing urban infrastructure ranging from highways, railroad tracks, or various waterways are underutilized spaces with the capacity to better integrate with elements of the city that they unintentionally divide. By gaining a better understanding of respected urban design theories aimed at stitching disconnected parts of the city, certain strategies can be taken and implemented into the development of these undiscovered spaces. This approach of activating uninhabited areas like these throughout an urban context will ultimately result in more unified city districts, complete with an improved cohesive pedestrian experience throughout.With all this in mind, I am looking more specifically into stimulating the pair of elongated green spaces along both sides of an urban river. In my experiences these types of areas don’t always foster any means in which to experience the water, never mind propose a dialogue between the city and the river. In some cases, they instead serve as an involuntary boundary almost entirely cutting off pedestrian access to this invaluable resource. My intentions are to develop a site-specific strategy consisting of sequential spaces primarily aimed at delivering the public from the depths of the urban context to the water, while also stitching together the two opposite sides of the river in order to establish a successful system of pedestrian links.
