description: Children with sensory impairments, especially those with visual impairments, often struggle to find independence and experience typical play. One such rite of passage is to ride a bicycle, play on a rideable toy car, or even push a toy baby stroller. It can be hard for parents of children with disabilities to trust them to steer through a chaotic world at faster speeds especially when these kids may not able to see or hear incoming danger. The child can then lose confidence in their own ability to navigate the world independently. A sensing system that could alert a user of upcoming obstacles and be easily installed on a broad range of riding toys may mitigate the risk these toys present to a visually and/or hearing-impaired child.The proposed system uses ultrasonic distance sensors to detect people, walls, and other objects and relay the information via haptic feedback and audible noise to alert the rider. Two removable attachments will be created that can easily strap into place where the rider would naturally rest their hands, allowing them to comfortably grip onto the device. Silicone and tightening clamps will ensure there is minimal slipping to keep the device secure. Sonar sensors will be housed in a box and attached to the toy’s front. This input box will allow for detection of oncoming obstacles in the front of the bike as well as peripheral detection fifteen degrees to either side. The main objectives of the system will be to ensure the safety of the user as well as a sense of satisfaction and a renewed belief in their own power.
