description: The typical audience for house wind turbines could range anywhere from cabin dwellers living off grid and need small energy sources, to those living in rural areas with roof space that want to support and utilize environmentally friendly energy. In this work, we consider various aspects of small wind turbines’ (SWTs) design and operation. First, an extensive literature study is presented by considering SWTs specification, market statistics, the smart grid, the efficiency of wind turbines. Then, both the literature review and series of coupled numerical simulations investigating impact of the chosen design solutions on small wind turbine operation are performed to choose an ideal design. Each team member made a new blade system design and tested it on SolidWorks. From there we also decided that a gearbox would be needed in order to ramp up the rpms of the shaft going into the generator, which in turn would help produce more wattage. With the new blade system, we generate an output of 55.96 rpm. We decided to change the generator to the DC 12V 24V 400W Permanent Magnet Generator. The new generator outputs 400W at 600 rpm so we decided to go with a 11:1 gearbox in order to get 615.3 rpm, going into the generator. We estimated over the 600 rpm needed for the generator to make sure that even when wind speeds are slightly lower than average, we will still output the 400W.
