description: Plagiocephaly, more commonly known as ‘flat head syndrome’, occurs in 46.6% of babies all around the world. This condition can be diagnosed based upon a baby’s skull being flattened on the parietal, frontal, occipital, and temporal lobes. This condition can be categorized into two different types: congenital and positional. Congenital plagiocephaly occurs at birth, while positional develops throughout the infancy stages. Currently treatment options are not reflective of modern technological advancements and therefore warrant change. Treatment options on the market range from pillows to helmets however, the helmet has the highest and fastest recovery rate. The goal of this project is to improve the process for treating patients who suffer from Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome). Through the utilization of a class one laser with an adapter for an iphone/ipad doctors will be able to take a series of pictures and videos of a baby’s head and upload them to a mobile app, which will be custom made by our group. Within the mobile app there will be a toolbar that can be used to model helmet options for the patient. Once the shape is determined this design will be 3D printed. The goals are to eliminate the use of concrete molding when fitting babies for helmets, decrease the manufacturing time of helmets, stay within an affordable range and make the product child friendly. This streamlined process will be easy to use for physicians, have little to no contact with the baby and provide a more aesthetically pleasing product.
