description: This thesis explores the opportunities of adaptable housing through the adaptive re-use of the once popular American shopping mall. As malls lose foot traffic, the stores within them begin to go as well. It is important to be mindful of the current trends of household behaviors. Households respond to their current economic situations, and much of the population is finding it difficult to find the appropriate housing arrangement. The concept of a mixed use micro city addresses the surrounding communities through the incorporation of opportunities for social interaction between the local neighborhoods. Through creating this mixed use micro city, the overall space created will be a move towards a more vibrant concept of a new suburban typology. This thesis proposes an example of transforming a shopping mall into adaptable housing units. As cities evolve opportunities arise that brings change. With new hybrid building types, new cities form, micro-cirties [sic].
