description: There is a growing disconnection betweenour built environment and ecology. This can beattributed to our lack of incorporating natural elements not only on the interiors of buildings, but theexterior façades as well. This could be helped withthe careful application of Biophilic Design anddifferent configurations of plants. For designers totry and combat these revelations, the term biophiliawas coined by Edward O. Wilson, and we can startto define biophilia as, “…humans’ inherent affinityfor the natural world, which is revealed in nine basicenvironmental values.”1These elements can be usedand manipulated in different ways to emulate certaincharacteristics in building design. They can affectdifferent elements such as the facades and materials,especially if these are regular building materials orliving plants. Plants have a much greater capacity to definesurface and space within architecture. Plants mostof the time are used as an application to architectural form. Plants have specific growth patterns andconfigurations that can start to redefine surfacesfrom a single layered envelope to an ecological collection of materials. All the different plants will beorganized to produce enclosure or spatial definitionwithout reliance or total dependence on architecturalframework. This also in turn integrates the innatedesire to connect humans with nature, in a way thatis deeply integrated in architectural form. This integration also helps produce a healthy environmentnot only for the people with direct connection to thebuilding, but the surrounding areas as well.
