description: Visual Studio Code is a popular code editor that can be customized with extensions for a variety of programming languages and purposes. Oftentimes archive files are generated or otherwise used in a development process and inspecting these can be useful. However, Visual Studio Code does not currently have a way to do this, while other environments do. The project consists of a VS Code extension that can extract archive files of multiple types to a temporary directory that can be browsed from within VS Code. This is accomplished by leveraging VS Code’s extension API to build an extension that provides users with tools for working with archives in their development environment. The extension can identify archive files, unpack them based on the algorithm used to pack them, then put the unpacked contents in a temporary directory connected to the current workspace. This project supports ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, JAR, AAR, and 7z archives, and can be extended to add more types. Archive extraction is implemented in the project, and libraries were used for decompression. An information page for archive files is also included in the extension. After the project is completed for the course, it will be open-sourced for continued development.
