description: During the COVID-19 pandemic, people want to feel safe when they are outside their homes, especially when looking for necessities such as groceries. The Grocery Store Robot 2020 (GSR-20) is a multipurpose robot that implements automation into a grocery store environment, and is designed to make online shopping both fun and interactive for customers. In addition, introducing automation to grocery stores allows them to continue functioning during the current global pandemic. GSR-20 was originally designed around the idea of utilizing robotics to carry out certain tasks, such as stocking shelves and taking inventory; but the modularity of the device means that other capabilities could be implemented as well. Several navigation methods were tested; of these, a line-tracking system was deemed the most effective. The flexibility and speed of Arduino programming and 3-D printing technology allowed for multiple assembly approaches and functionality tests to be developed rapidly. The results of these tests demonstrated that GSR-20 is capable of carrying out various grocery store tasks, while promoting social distancing and making automation more user friendly for businesses.
