description: Following the industrial revolution, mass production generated materials with incredible speed in the form of sheet goods. This new method of making results in an efficiency to building where the experienced surface becomes a mere wallpaper, whereas historically construction was viewed as an effort of community, primarily building with thick and voluminous materials. While the modernmanufacturing of materials results in a world of plasticity, it ignores the characteristics of generating intensity1 by pretending as if even the most mundane of materials are intangible. This is only amplified through the ever-thinning experience of sheet all the way to projections. One way to investigate the options is to create a set of rules that puts material and surface at the forefront, ahead of site context and history as it is the viewer in the present that experiences architecture. By investigating the definition of space, not through volumetric form, but instead through material properties and finishes at the periphery, architects are able to create powerful spaces that go beyond applying a mere wallpaper.The intensification of the chosen materials in a project can completely transform the spatial experience and potentially define and enhance the interactions and activities that take place within it.
