In accordance to the Boston Public Library “Compass: Principles of Excellence” and analysis of precedents, libraries must emphasize program, community, balance of historic and contemporary, interior and exterior, and light and shadow. Through the library’s evolution, a balance of defined historic and dynamic contemporary program provides for the user’s and community’s needs.
